This iPad Mini 6 Cover Has MagSafe Charging Capabilities
Pitaka’s newest case is available if you’ve desired MagSafe-style easy charging on an iPad Mini.
iPad 6 Case that is MagSafe compatible
When used with the supplied pad, the new $79 MagEZ Case Pro for the sixth-generation iPad Mini (called the iPad Mini 6) includes magnetic points on the rear that carry power via the iPad’s USB-C connection. You can also use it in conjunction with the $129 MagEZ Charging Stand, which raises the tablet and has a second Qi charging point in its base for a phone or headphones.
This strategy does have certain drawbacks. Pitaka’s cover does not utilize the magnets built into the back of the iPad Mini, and it limits access to the USB-C connector, leaving you with just the magnetic pad to charge the tablet. While the case is on, forget about data sharing via a wired connection.
The casing is made of tough rubber with a carbon fibre-like weave pattern that should guard against most normal drops but isn’t the most durable item I’ve seen. It also does not cover the screen like Apple’s folio covers, so you’ll need to couple it with a screen protector.
On the good side, the cover allows for Apple Pencil charging on the right side, and there’s a little attachment that captures the Pencil and keeps it in place when you throw the iPad in a bag.
Aside from those drawbacks, the MagEZ definitely lives up to the “easy” part of its name, since charging is as simple as placing the case near the base and letting the magnets do their work. The magnetic connection is strong, and the stand comfortably holds the iPad in landscape or portrait mode. The stand also tilts, but there is no height adjustment.
Pitaka advises a 45W USB-C Power Delivery brick if you want to charge the iPad plus a phone at full speed on the stand, which neither the case nor the stand comes with. (The base can charge iPhones at 7.5W and other Qi devices at up to 15W.)
Should You Purchase It?
To make this configuration viable, you must be completely dedicated to desiring magnetic charging, since neither the case nor the stand is inexpensive. If it isn’t a deal-breaker, both accessories should be available beginning today, May 30th.
