Samsung has been patenting all sorts of weird folding phone designs since developing flexible OLED display technology, and now that its single-hinge model has proven commercial success, it appears like it’s time for the other concepts to shine on shelves.

The South Korean tech giant already offers a popular horizontally folding phone in the Galaxy Z Flip series, as well as a bigger, full-featured vertically folding phone in the Z Fold 3. The 4th edition of these phones will have sturdier display covers, an integrated S Pen pen silo, similar to the S22 Ultra, and new CPUs, all of which are expected advancements.

Dohyun Kim, one of the men who was leaking accurate Galaxy S22 information before the phones were revealed, has contacted the folks at LetsGoDigital to alert them that Samsung is working on a dual-hinge foldable phone for a commercial release in the near future. They’ve generated 3D renderings of what such a gadget would look like.

Samsung Foldable Phone with Dual Hinges

This origami phone will fold in both directions, vertically and horizontally, and will be somewhat larger than the present Z Fold 3. We tremble at the prospect of the obstacles that such a phone would entail for Samsung, but we salivate at the potential that such a novel form factor would provide.

Samsung is also working on a custom UI for the multi-fold Z phone, which will make use of the phone’s unusual dual-hinge design. As for a specific release date, we haven’t heard anything yet, but Samsung is betting big on foldables going forward, so we could hear a lot more about it, or possibly see it in action, before 2024. One thing we can say for sure is that we expect the device’s overall performance as stellar as the previous foldables released, the smartphone should easily remove duplicate photos easily.

Samsung showed a number of functioning prototype phones with multi-fold designs at the CES exhibition in January, including this one named the Fold S, implying that a commercial launch isn’t far off. In case you’re skeptical that Samsung can pull something like this off, there was also a slidable display prototype.
