On Android, you’ll soon be able to archive applications to save space

Most of us have had to delete apps to clear up space on our phones at some time. While the emergence of handsets with 64GB and 128GB of internal storage has made it less of an issue in recent years, not everyone can afford to increase their phone’s storage. But, with any luck, removing applications to free up space on your Android device will be a thing of the past.

Google said today that it is working on a new feature that it claims would save 60 percent of the space used by some apps. Best of all, your personal information will not be harmed. App archiving is the name of the function, and it will be available later this year. Rather than entirely uninstalling an app, it only removes some pieces of it and creates a new sort of Android Package known as an archived APK. That package saves your shared data until you return the app to its previous state.

Before the feature’s public availability later this year, Google has begun making archived APKs available to developers. App archiving isn’t likely to be useful if you possess a current high-end handset like the Galaxy S22, but it’s a feature that may be really useful for folks with low-end devices.
