Now is the time to update to iOS 15.3

Apple has released iOS 15.3 with a reminder to update right now. That’s because the most recent operating system update addresses ten security flaws, one of which has already been exploited to target iPhones.

Because Apple wants as many users as possible to upgrade without alerting attackers to vulnerabilities, it withholds much data about what’s addressed in iOS 15.3.

Vulnerabilities Found

A weakness in IOMobileFrameBuffer, according to Apple’s support website, was patched in iOS 15.3 and is already being leveraged to target iPhones. A malicious program might be able to run arbitrary code with kernel privileges as a result of this. Security weaknesses in WebKit, the browser engine that runs Apple’s Safari browser, iCloud, and Kernel are also addressed in iOS 15.3, which is the first major point update since December.

According to Sean Wright, SME security lead at Immersive Labs, the most prominent remedy in iOS 15.3 is for Safari WebKit, where a vulnerability may share data such as your browser history and perhaps your Google account data. “While the danger remains minimal, there is still a potential that a rogue app may access your important information,” he says of the iCloud flaw that allows a program to access a user’s file.

Why Users Should Update

Although the iOS 15.3 update does not address as many bugs as some of Apple’s previous patches, many of the flaws are critical. This is particularly significant given that one of the issues addressed in iOS 15.3 is already being used to target iPhones.

We recommend that you upgrade your iPhone to iOS 15.3 as soon as can, whether you are a company or not. Now is as good a moment as any to get started.

Another incentive to update to iOS 15.3 right away is that Apple was offering critical security fixes to customers who wished to maintain their iPhones on iOS 14. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case — the iPhone maker is now only releasing security updates to users on iOS 15, the most recent version of its software.
