Leaked MacBook Air 2022 Might Hurt M2 Performance
The MacBook Air 2022 is expected to be unveiled on June 6 during Apple’s WWDC 2022 event, although we don’t anticipate a significant power gain over the MacBook Air M1.
Update for the MacBook Air 2022
The Apple M2 processor has been the subject of several rumors. As the M1 line’s successor, it’s natural to expect the M2 to be more powerful. The newest reports, though, point to a small boost at best for Apple’s next generation of silicon.
According to Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo, the first M2 processors might debut in the next generation of 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. The M2 processor might possibly make an appearance in the MacBook Air 2022. Hence, we will have to wait for faster iOS transfers for a while.
However, past speculations have stated that the M2 will not be much more powerful than the M1. According to Kuo, Apple may rename the revised chip “M2” to encourage sales or save the moniker for chips launching in 2023.
In that regard, Kuo said that TSMC’s upgraded N3 and N4P manufacturing processes would not be ready for mass production until 2023. As a result, Apple’s 2022 chips will very certainly utilise the present N5P and N4 processes. Kuo says N4 has no major benefit over N5P. This is said to be the case with the next A16 processor, which is expected to power the iPhone 14 Pro. According to Kuo, the names “A16” and “M2” may exist for marketing reasons.
If these reports are accurate, we’ll have to wait until 2023 to see the actual successor to the M1 chip series. As a result, it may be prudent to reduce one’s expectations for the M2 and A16 chips. According to these and other reports, the performance bump seen between the 2020 M1 chip and the 2021 M1 Pro and M1 Max may not be repeated.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had stated that the M2 chip will contain an 8-core CPU with four efficiency and high-performance cores, as well as a 10-core GPU. As a result, it would be less powerful than the M1 Pro and M1 Max, but more powerful than the M1 chip.
