iOS 2023: 4 New and Improved Features to Enhance Your User Experience
2023 marks the arrival of iOS 17, and while details about the update remain scarce, we do know about some of the new features that will be rolling out this year through updates like iOS 16.3 and iOS 16.4.
Web Push Notifications
iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 will introduce support for opt-in web-based push notifications in 2023. This will allow iPhone and iPad users to receive notifications from websites through Safari, just like notifications from apps.
Security Keys for Apple ID
The iOS 16.3 beta includes a new feature called Security Keys for Apple ID, which will be available globally in early 2023. This feature allows users to protect their accounts with hardware security keys, which are used as one of the two factors in Apple’s two-factor authentication system instead of a verification code from another Apple device. While Apple does not plan to release its own hardware security keys, third-party options from brands like Yubico will be compatible with the feature.
Advanced Data Protection in More Countries
iOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, and other recent software updates introduced an optional Advanced Data Protection feature that expands end-to-end encryption to a number of iCloud services, including iCloud Backups, Photos, Notes, Reminders, and Voice Memos. It is worth mentioning Apple users can now transfer files across devices through iCloud without the fear of their data being compromise. Initially, this feature was only available to U.S. users, but it will be rolling out to the rest of the world in early 2023. It is unclear exactly when Advanced Data Protection will be available in other countries, but it is likely to be included in iOS 16.3 or iOS 16.4.
Next-Generation CarPlay
At WWDC 2022, Apple previewed the next generation of CarPlay, its software platform for integrating iPhones with vehicles. The new version will include support for multiple displays, widgets, and integration with vehicle functions such as the instrument cluster, climate controls, and FM radio.
The first vehicles with support for the updated CarPlay experience will be announced in late 2023, with committed automakers including Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo, and others. Apple plans to share more information about the next generation of CarPlay later in the year.
These are all the updates we expect however knowing how unpredictable Apple can be at times, the company might have plenty of surprises in store for 2023.
