How to Remove Mac Photos and Videos Duplicates

If you do not routinely sort your photo library on your Mac, over the years, there might be numerous duplicate photos and videos cluttering up your storage. You might be running out of space due to the unwanted photos, or the mess might just annoy you. If you want to get rid of all the duplicate media, than Apple recently released a new version of Photos that automatically scans your entire photos library for duplicate photos and videos.

Here’s How it Works

Backup your Mac using Time Machine first. Backup your Mac using Time Machine before starting any procedure that might erase data such as running the duplicate remover feature. Backup your Photos library. Install macOS Ventura. You can’t just download Photos without the newest macOS.

A Photos Duplicates folder appears after the upgrade. However, that folder may be empty when clicked. The system will check your Photos collection for duplicates instead. The procedure is particularly irritating here. There is no progress bar — Photo is either scanning for duplicates or it isn’t — and it might take a while, but eventually some files will appear in the folder to suggest that something is occurring. Apple claims the Photos app scans while your Mac is powered on and not in use.

Photos populates a Duplicates folder after searching. Smart copy-merging. As you navigate through the duplicates, Photos will ask for permission to delete each group. Photos will combine identical copies with better information to create a single version with the best quality and metadata.

Photographs may discover similar but not identical photos or videos. One may be higher-resolution. Photos will join the files again, making a high-quality copy with maximum information.
