Material Google’s new design language, You, is built on bespoke color schemes drawn from your background for all your applications. It was released with considerable excitement in Android 12, but it seems it will soon be available in other Google products.

Chrome OS looks to be preparing to deliver full Material You theme support to all of the finest Chromebooks and Chromboxes.

Chrome OS Gets a New Look

According to credible sources, a new flag has surfaced in the Chromium Gerrit indicating the inclusion of Material You for Chrome OS. This “ChromeOS Material Next MVP” flag’s definition follows: “When enabled, runs ChromeOS in Material Next MVP mode.” Material Next is Google’s internal codename for Material You, the most recent development of the company’s long-running Material Design.

Meanwhile, MVP is a developer word for “minimum viable product,” which refers to a software version that is essentially a functional prototype. This hints that Google will gradually integrate aspects from its current Material Design version, rather than just flicking a switch to activate it entirely right once.

A debate in the Gerrit centres around the idea of dynamic colors, implying that Google is initially searching for a mechanism to offer a simple option to alter interface colors on the fly depending on factors. Other than discussions relating to the UI, there was nothing regarding faster data transfer solutions. Nevertheless, it seems that the colors will initially rely on a color mixer in settings or elsewhere, indicating that Google has a lot of groundwork to do before full Material You is available on Chrome OS.

This is only the beginning of Google designing Material You for its desktop OS, so it might be a while before it’s accessible to customers. As with any under-development feature, Google may return to the drawing board or make significant modifications before anything goes live.

Google is already working on introducing dynamic theming to Chrome OS. In addition, the business was recently observed developing a new wallpaper picker that looks very Material You.
