Google Pixel 7 & Pixel Tablet Camera Sensors Revealed
Google Pixel devices are the best mid-range smartphones out there. You get a feature packed, flagship device even with a tight budget. Details about the latest Pixel 7 are starting to gradually roll out. New information on the camera sensors used in the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel tablet has been revealed, implying small enhancements for the Pixel 7 and the Pixel tablet’s cost.
Details about the Pixel 7 and Tablet
Thanks to an upgrade to the Google Camera app, our APK Insight team was able to unearth some data regarding the specifications and software features that Google has planned for the Pixel 7 series and Pixel tablet last month.
For starters, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will both feature the Samsung 3J1 as a front-facing sensor, allowing them to take 11MP selfie shots. This differs from the Pixel 6 Pro, which uses a comparable Sony IMX663 sensor.
Sources earlier said that the two phones will most likely share the same front-facing camera, given both Pixel 7 variants are listed as enabling 4K selfie video recording in the Google Camera app. The Pixel 6 sported an 8MP selfie camera in contrast to the Pixel 6 Pro’s 11MP front-facing sensor.
The most intriguing aspect of the front camera is that the Samsung 3J1 sensor, like the IMX663 before it, supports dual-pixel focusing (DPAF). While DPAF is often utilized to create stunning portrait/bokeh images, we’ve learnt that the depth data from the camera should also play a part in the face unlock system Google is still actively developing for the Pixel series.
Otherwise, it seems that the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro will feature camera hardware that is fairly comparable to that of the Pixel 6 series. The primary sensor will be the 50MP Samsung GN1, paired with the Sony IMX381 for the ultrawide. The telephoto sensor this year will be the Samsung GM1 rather of the IMX586, but the two are quite comparable in their capabilities. Moreover, we expect updated clone phone abilities as well with the Pixel 7 variants.
Turning to the Pixel tablet (codenamed Tangor), which was scheduled for release next year, it seems Google is equipping it with two Sony IMX355 sensors — one on the front and one on the back. Since 2018, they have been used in Google hardware to enable selfies in phones such as the Pixel 3 and Pixel 6. It was also the back camera on Google’s most current tablet, the Pixel Slate 2018.
These lower-end camera sensors hint at how Google may be trying to make the Pixel tablet more cheap, but at the expense of losing the Pixel series’ renowned photography.
