Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Mozilla have teamed up to address browser compatibility difficulties
Google, Microsoft, Apple, Mozilla, Bocoup, and Igalia, as well as other supporters, have stated that they have come together for the first time ever to promote interoperability and so make things much easier for web developers. This is all part of Interop 2022, a new benchmark aimed at “improving the experience of producing for the web in 15 important areas.”
Top Web Browsers United
This initiative began in 2019 when these firms set out to investigate developers’ problems with browser compatibility issues and determine how changes and new technologies may be applied in a similar manner. As a result of the new benchmark, a shared dashboard will be established to measure progress in the major areas that were agreed upon with the developers’ involvement. Cascade layers, CSS color functions, viewport units, and browser scrolling are just a few of the major topics. They’ll also focus on Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox, which are the four primary browsers involved.
The concept is that each browser is evaluated against a series of tests throughout the year and given a score based on how well it implements each of these categories. This will allow them to work on the best approach to execute them in a way that benefits everyone. The collaboration will also mean that browsers will be able to share data with the developers in a more uniform manner.
Last year’s Compat 2021 initiative showed that there is still potential for improvement, so the fact that these large stakeholders can join together and collaborate on a solution is quite promising. Hopefully, this initiative will alleviate difficulties among site developers, as well as provide a better user experience.
