Apple’s next AR/VR headset will have three screens in 2022
According to a study report released today by display researcher Ross Young, Apple’s mixed reality headgear, which is slated to ship in 2022, would include three screens.
Two tiny OLED panels and one AMOLED panel will be used in the display layout, with Sony supplying the micro OLED screens for Apple. The mini OLED panels will be the headset’s primary displays, although it’s unclear what the AMOLED display will be utilized for.
Further Details
Since AMOLED technology isn’t used in modern VR headsets due to the low pixel density, it’s feasible that Apple may include it for low-resolution peripheral vision.
Sony recently unveiled a 4K panel with 4000 pixels per inch built for use with virtual reality headsets, and the story speculates that Sony designed this display expressly for Apple. If Apple does use this Sony technology, the headset’s display will be 1.4 inches diagonally, based on an anticipated array of 4000 x 4000 pixels.
This kind of complex display setup will come at a “premium price,” according to Young, who estimates that the headset would cost several thousand dollars, which is consistent with prior rumors that suggested a price of roughly $3,000 for the headset.
Apple’s initial AR/VR headset will most likely be aimed at professionals and developers and will be used to build the company’s AR/VR ecosystem. According to current speculations, the headset might be unveiled during this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference and released later in the year, although it is unclear whether it will be ready in time.
