According to a recent patent, the upcoming AirPods Pro — dubbed AirPods Pro 2 and anticipated later this year — could offer a bold new feature. Depending on the demands of the patent, it may be expanded to include the existing AirPods Pro and AirPods Max as well.

AirPods Pro 2 Upgrades

Apple has been innovating and upgrading its products at a rapid pace, the tech giant latest OS release has been the most impressive so far. It gives users more freedom with their iPhones and enables the devices to carry out complex tasks such as removing duplicate photos seamlessly. The latest product to get an upgrade is the AirPods.

The noise-canceling technology in Apple AirPods Pro and AirPods Max is incredible, so you can watch movies or listen to music on a plane without being distracted by engine noise, or work from home without being disturbed by family noise.

You might not always desire the wonderful solitude that the system provides. Of course, you can easily disable the function and switch to Transparency Mode, allowing the outside world to seep in. But what if there was another way?

The goal of the new invention, “Interrupt for Noise-Cancelling Audio Devices,” is to allow you to hear the world even if your headphones are in a noise-canceling mode such as your friend trying to get your attention. If they are a “pre-designated contact,” also known as an “interrupt-authorized contact,” their voice will be permitted to reach your ears.

Alternatively, “a person who speaks a predetermined keyword to the user” might interrupt noise-canceling, according to the patent. Once you’ve chosen a few terms, this may be a useful update. If we have understood the impenetrable legalese in which these patents are written, it appears that this will happen through a type of voice identification. To put it another way, because the speaker’s voice is recognized by you and your devices, it will automatically “transmit an instruction to the peripheral device to switch from the second mode of operation to the first mode of operation if the person is determined to be one of the interrupt-authorized contacts.”

Or, to put it another way, when the correct person is trying to talk to you, the AirPods will switch off noise-cancellation. It’s also worth noting that it mentions “one of” the contacts, implying that you might have many authorized interrupters.

Furthermore, the AirPods may detect whether the chosen voice is speaking to someone other than you and disregard the interruption. As a result, the AirPods might utilize “time-of-arrival difference information acquired by the headphones” to determine whether or not you should listen.
