Apple is urging users to update their iPhone due to security issues
Apple is one of the biggest tech moguls in the world but it is not impervious to security issues it seems. The Silicon Valley giant has urged its users to immediately update its software to fix security bugs that may have already been exploited by hackers. However, the extent of the breach has not been disclosed.
The following statement has been released on, 26 January 2021, on Apple’s support page, “For our customers’ protection, Apple doesn’t disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available” The company claims that the issue is a link in exploit chain which means that the hackers would need to exploit further bugs in order to fully bypass security No further comments were made.
It is worth mentioning that the active malware threat can be used to read texts and email, record calls (including WhatsApp and Viber calls), track your location, carry out iPhone transfer and turn on your phone’s camera and microphone. Additionally, the security breach was reported by an anonymous researcher. This is proof that Apple is not impervious to malware threats, last year researchers at Google found several websites with code that allowed hackers to quietly infiltrate iPhones.
The update does not only concern security patches but also includes fixes for keyboard lag and allows smaller QR codes to be read by the camera.
As of now, the full extent of this threat is unknown since Apple declined t comment further. The update may fix the issue but it raises an important question about the fragility of Apple’s security since this is not the first time such a breach has occurred. It is a cautionary tale for users that even the biggest tech companies are not impervious to malware threats.
