The MagSafe Charging Case for the third-generation AirPods is sweat and water-resistant, making it the first charging case with an IPX4 rating for the standard AirPods. With the third-generation AirPods’ launch last week, Apple touted their sweat and water resistance, but the IPX4 rating applies to both the earbuds and the charging case. The AirPods Pro was the first AirPods to provide sweat and water resistance, however, the feature is limited to the earbuds themselves, with no sweat or water resistance rating on the charging case.

Further Details

AirPods have an IPX4 grade, which implies they can withstand water splashing, dripping, and spraying. It also means that AirPods aren’t waterproof (IPX5) or can’t be submerged in water (IPX7). The “X” in the grade denotes the AirPods’ lack of solids or dust ingress prevention. The AirPods Pro now comes with an upgraded Charging Case that includes MagSafe, however, unlike the third-generation AirPods, it is not officially qualified for ingress protection. “The Wireless Charging Case and MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods Pro are not sweat and water-resistant,” Apple confirmed on its latest AirPods Pro specs page.

Improved sound quality, a redesigned design with shorter stems, force sensor controls, spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive EQ, Find My support, and more are among the features of the third-generation AirPods. Except for silicone in-ear tips and Active Noise Cancellation, these features were first introduced with the AirPods Pro, however, Apple has since updated the basic AirPods to match its “Pro” brother (ANC).

The AirPods now outperform the AirPods Pro in terms of sweat and water resistance, but the IPX4-rated charging case isn’t the only new feature on the third-generation AirPods; the earphones also have a brand-new skin-detect sensor.

The AirPods Pro uses twin optical sensors to identify if they are in a user’s ear, rather than skin-detect sensors in each earbud. While the optical sensors functionally accomplish the same purpose, they can only detect when they are covered up, rather than when they are directed against the skin. This means that putting an AirPods Pro earpiece in your pocket or on a surface could cause play to resume. Although there have been no speculations suggesting the next-generation AirPods Pro will include the new skin-detect sensor and sweat and water-resistant MagSafe Charging Case, it appears fairly likely that Apple will bring its mid-range AirPods up to parity with the entry-level model.

Summing Up

Customers around the world have started receiving the third-generation AirPods ahead of the device’s formal debut tomorrow. In other news there are fantastic duplicate photo remover applications available on the Apple AppStore, be sure to check them out to get a sorted gallery.
