Apple allegedly discussed a potential acquisition with Electronic Arts
According to a recent report, Apple is one of many corporations that have conducted negotiations with Electronic Arts (EA) regarding a possible acquisition.
Potential Acquisition
As it seeks a merger agreement, EA has talked with many “possible suitors,” including Apple, Amazon, and Disney. Apple and the other firms refused to comment, and the current state of the negotiations is unknown, although Apple is interested in gaming owing to its Apple Arcade service.
EA’s initial choice was Disney, and the game business contacted Disney in March to build a “more significant partnership” than licensing arrangements, but Disney opted against pursuing an acquisition. EA also met with NBCUniversal and was close to a contract, but the discussions fell apart due to price and structural concerns. EA CEO Andrew Wilson wants to stay on as CEO after a merger, which might present problems if Apple decides to buy the firm.
There have been some reports, the files shared reveal that Apple intends to compete in the AAA gaming industry, publishing titles that compete with those available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, but thus far the firm has adhered to simpler games developed for the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.
Apple has been offering the $4.99 per month Apple Arcade gaming service since 2019, and it has been constantly increasing with new games added on a regular basis. An EA purchase may provide Apple with access to a higher-quality game as well as a number of very popular gaming titles, but it remains to be seen whether Apple is serious about expanding its gaming presence.
The game industry is undergoing significant consolidation, with Microsoft recently acquiring Activision Blizzard for over $70 billion and Sony purchasing Bungie for $3.6 billion.
