Samsung has been leading the tech world with its smartphone technology. The company has been constantly working on delivering the most innovative products to consumers. Its foldable phones are commendable since they provide users with top-notch design and features making the price worth it.

Samsung today introduced the “first-in-industry” LPDDR5X DRAM for smartphones and mobile devices.

Super-Charged DRAM

Samsung claims that their new LPDDR5X DRAM can process data at up to 8.5 Gbps, which is 1.3 times quicker than normal LPDDR5 RAM (6.4 Gbps) while requiring 20% less power. Moreover, the tech company claims to be the first manufacturer to produce 16GB LPDDR5X modules, which can be coupled to provide up to 64GB of RAM in a single device, thanks to the new 14-nanometer technology.

Aside from the 8.5 Gbps transfer rate, LPDDR5X is meant to enable 16 memory banks per channel across the board, as compared to normal LPDDR5, which can support anywhere from 8 to 16 memory banks depending on the configuration.

Samsung says their new LPDDR5X DRAM was developed to enable a wide range of high-speed applications in sectors including 5G, AI, vehicles, and, like every other firm these days, the metaverse, in addition to being utilized in future high-end phones. This will aid in speeding up processes such as duplicate photo remover.

Samsung’s LPDDR5X “will widen the usage of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and provide new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even autos,” according to SangJoon Hwang, Samsung Electronics VP and head of DRAM design.

According to the corporation, it will begin collaborating with chipmakers to “create a more viable framework for the burgeoning world of digital reality” and this super-charged DRAM will reportedly be the “basis” of that reality.

Summing Up

Samsung hasn’t given us a specific date for when we might see LPDDR5X DRAM in consumer devices, but based on Samsung’s plan to deploy the new memory to power new VR and AR applications, we anticipate seeing LPDDR5X DRAM in devices next year.
